Access is available for year 11 leavers with special educational needs. Students follow the ASDAN Life Skills course over one or two years with course tutors John Carr, Katy Ainscough and Sue Clack. Students taking this course should be those wishing to continue to make improvements in their education before moving on. Our aim is to work closely with the schools, agencies and employers to ensure a smooth transition from education into employment or other areas.
On the Access Entry Course students achieve entry level qualifications in English PSHE and ICT with course tutor Eileen Havard. Students would all potentially benefit from another year in education and the course concentrates on improving functional skills and preparing for employment.
Access level 1 is a one year course. Some students apply to join in March through the normal admission route but others are able to enrol as late as September when GCSE results are in. Entry is done by interview and students should again have the potential to improve their education over the year. The course allows students to gain qualifications in different subject areas, which are offered at College, such as care, art, drama, sport, hair and beauty, media, or in practical skills useful in an apprenticeship. Course tutor Liz van Katwyk teaches an introduction to IT course and Jackie Chilton is tutor to the students following the other courses.
All the courses put a special emphasis on basic skills and we aim to get students qualifications in Adult Literacy and Numeracy and ICT at level 1 or 2, depending on ability, before they leave.
Progression is possible within the programme area and students can access individual subjects with a different group if appropriate. After a year at Access level 1 students who have progressed well are able to apply and move onto level 2 courses at College or to employment helped by our work placement input.
