Art & Design

Level 3 BTEC in Art and Design

This is a two year advanced level course which will give you the opportunity to develop your own interests in and understanding of art and design.

Through studio-directed projects and practical assignments you will explore a wide range of disciplines and areas:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Sculpture
  • Printmaking
  • Photography
  • Video and animation
  • Graphic design
  • Web design
  • 3D design
  • Fashion and textiles
  • Installation and performance art
  • Historical and contextual studies

The programme is designed to stimulate creative ability, to promote enquiry and to produce experimental work that reflects your own ideas.

The International Artist in Residence Programme, together with educational visits to both London and Paris will help you to develop a more in-depth understanding of both historical and contemporary references within the subject.

Your work will be regularly assessed and some assessments will be external. To qualify for the Level 3 Certificate you will need to successfully achieve twelve units of study and for the Level 3 Diplomas you will need to successfully achieve eighteen units of study.

On successful completion of this course you will have the opportunity to study the subject at a higher level, for example at art college or university, or you could seek employment locally in one of the several design houses.

UK university art departments will generally accept successful Level 3 students without the need to complete a foundation course. Career opportunities exist in all areas of the visual arts, design and media world.

Level 3 entry requirements

Students studying for the Level 3 (eighteen units) will have a minimum of four GCSE passes at grade C or above, including English and mathematics or an appropriate Level 2 Diploma, or an appropriate GNVQ Intermediate (merit grade). Students without grade C or above in English or mathematics will be expected to resit or study further in those subjects and will study for the National Certificate (twelve units).

You will need to attend an interview and bring with you a portfolio of your recent art and design work.

The courses are based at the Delancey Campus

The world of Graphics, Design and Advertising has always been a passion of mine and the thought of having a job in this area excites me. I am keen to gain more experience and to develop my skills to a higher level, which is why I am displaying an exhibition of my recent work in my Final Year Show in the hope that an on-island design team will see my potential for the subject.

Although I want to go straight into working for a design company, I am also planning to further my education by attending an evening class studying Graphic Design and Advertising on the HND course at the College of Further Education.
