The Building and Construction Department of the College caters for those people wishing to gain qualifications, experience and expertise in the trade areas of the building industry. The college is able to offer training in the main trade areas of Electrical Installations, Carpentry & Joinery, Plumbing, Trowel Trades and Painting & Decorating.
All courses are linked to the Guernsey Apprenticeships Scheme which is administered by Alma Harradine (almah@gcfe.net). Students traditionally follow a five-year apprenticeship with a local employer who is a member of the scheme. Over the period of the apprenticeship students will undertake a number of City & Guilds examinations in order to gain the minimum of a Level 2 qualification. Most students manage to gain Level 3 Advanced Diploma qualifications with somje continuing on after the five year period to study CIOB courses at Level 3 and 4.
Students following Building & Construction courses usually attend one day a week at the college. Approximately 60% of their time at the college will be spent following practical tasks with the remainder of the day taken up with theoretical studies.
Students who require learning support can obtain this through our Learning Support or Skills Development teams.
