The motor vehicle section delivers a range of craft courses to provide qualifications for apprentices working in local industry.
The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Technical Certificate courses are unit based qualifications with national external examinations taken at various stages and levels.
Level 1 studied over two years
Level 2 studied over two years
Level 3 studied over one year
A course for first year motor vehicle apprentices, providing an additional amount of practical training together with the normal elements of further education.
The first year will provide for three days at college. Two days will be spent in the workshops and students will gain a variety of extended basic skills in motor vehicle practice, welding processes and general engineering, the third day follows the IMI Technical Certificate Award in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.
External and internal examinations are taken during the year and a skills test is taken at the end of the year. This additional skills training with ‘on the job’ training provided by the employer will assist in improving the overall standards of apprentices within the motor trade.
The second year of study is conducted on a single day release and evening attendance.
A Level 1 Certificate is awarded upon the successful completion of the required number of units and examinations.
Applicants should be a minimum age of sixteen years, having completed their secondary education and be employed in the motor trade.
This is an ongoing study of Motor Vehicle subjects, but in greater depth. The higher level of study covers a wide area in light vehicle technology and repair work. A Level 2 Certificate is awarded upon the successful completion of the required number of units and examinations. Both years of study are conducted on a day release and evening attendance.
Applicants should have been successful in Level 1 studies.
This final year of study is more specialised and concentrates on the diagnosis of problems associated with the service and repair of the motor vehicle.
A Level 3 Certificate is awarded upon the successful completion of the require number of units and examinations.
Applicants should have been successful in Levels 1 and 2.
