Literacy & Numeracy

Our Literacy classes are aimed at anyone wishing to upskill on their reading, writing and oral communication, with the opportunity to achieve a Functional Skills qualification at the appropriate level.

There are three components: reading, writing, speaking & listening.

Reading includes purpose, features of text, bias, fact & opinion

Writing includes letters, articles, emails, blogs, reports with attention to spelling, punctuation & grammar

Speaking & listening includes discussions at Level 1 & a discussion & a presentation at Level 2

Our Numeracy classess are aimed at anyone wishing to improve their maths, with the opportunity to achieve a Functional Skills qualification at the appropriate level or to gain a GCSE at Foundation or Higher Tier.

The sessions are run as a workshop with appropriate materials provided for the different qualifications. Students will work through these individually both in the sessions (with support from tutors when necessary) and at home on their own.

The maths GCSE in particular will require a lot of work outside the sessions. The GCSE is a Linear one year course.

The Functional Skills maths exam uses a calculator throughout. The syllabus covers basic maths including decimals, percentages, fractions, ratios, scheduling, time and statistics in a problem solving context.
