The Built Environment is the term used to describe the man-made surroundings which the human race uses in its daily existence. These range from small shelters to complete towns and cities and include all the necessary infrastructures on which these structures depend.

The Built Environment is the product of human labour and combines materials, physical elements, energy and culture to produce physical forms for living, working and playing.

In practice the term is typically used to describe the inter-disciplinary field which addresses the design, construction and management of these man-made structures and how their use relates to human activity.

The Construction Industry in Guernsey employs some 3,000 people of which the design and management functions number approx 300. It is the fourth largest economic sector contributing some 8.8% of the whole island economy (Commerce & Employment 2009). The Built Environment Department works closely with the industry to ensure that students’ capabilities match the requirements of the sector. One of the great benefits available to potential students is the States Registered Apprenticeship Scheme which is administered by the Apprenticeship Scheme Officer (

The Built Environment Department offers a range of courses for all aspects of the construction industry. The National Diploma is a level 3 qualification and is the foundation for students to proceed to the Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment  and eventually to a BSc (Hons) in Construction Management or Architectural Technology.

We also run Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) courses at Level 4. These qualifications are of particular benefit to site managers and contract managers.
