The Hairdressing Course is a City and Guilds NVQ Level 3 course, the duration of which is 3 years, with the potential to continue for another year, should some modules require completion, which is very common.

The course covers a varied selection of units applicable to the trade, a list of which can be found below. As a customer centred trade, there are elements of etiquette and customer service which are delivered alongside the more theoretical aspects of the trade and these are developed in the earlier parts of the apprenticeship in the workplace.

Level 2 Mandatory Units

  • Making sure actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • Giving clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
  • Advising and consulting with clients
  • Shampooing, conditioning, and treatment of hair and scalp
  • Changing hair colour
  • Styling and finishing hair
  • Cutting hair using basic techniques
  • Promoting additional services or products to clients
  • Perming and neutralising hair (optional module)


  • Level 3 Mandatory units

  • Monitoring procedures to safely control work operations
  • Promoting additional services or products to customers
  • Providing hairdressing consultation services
  • Creatively cutting hair using a combination of techniques
  • Colouring hair using a variety of techniques
  • Providing colour correction services
  • Creatively styling and dressing hair
  • Creatively dressing long hair
  • Developing and enhancing creative hairdressing skills
  • Contributing to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.
