The BTEC Nationals in Business have been developed to:

  • support full-time learners in their desire to enter employment in the business sector or to progress to vocational qualifications such as the Edexcel BTEC Higher Nationals in Business
  • provide education and training for employees in the business sector and achieve a nationally recognised Level 2 and Level 3 vocationally-specific qualification
  • provide learners the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Level 2 BTEC Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma in Business

The Level 2 BTEC Certificate and Diploma are one year full-time courses.

All students enrol onto the Diploma and the aim of the course is to introduce you to business concepts and explore key aspects of how a business operates, providing you with a good grounding for employment or progression to a Level 3 qualification.

The course is a practical qualification studied over three terms and the full programme is equivalent to 4 GCSEs.

 What are the study options for the Level 2 Course?

  • The Certificate consists of two core and a choice of specialist units to reach a total of 240 guided learning hours (GLH)
  • The Extended Certificate consists of two core plus one mandatory and a choice of specialist units to reach a total of 360 GLH
  • The Diploma consists of three core, three mandatory plus a choice of specialist units to reach a total of 480 GLH

Completed units are accumulated so that different qualifications could be awarded but the aim is for all students to achieve a Diploma.

For example, after the first term you should have achieved the Certificate and be on your way to completing the Extended Certificate by the end of the second term.

Core units include:

  • business purpose
  • business organisations
  • financial forecasting
  • people in organisations

 

Specialist units may include :

  • business enterprise
  • marketing plans
  • managing personal finances
  • bookkeeping for business

 

How is the course assessed?

You are required to complete coursework which will be in a variety of formats from written reports and briefs through to role-plays and presentations.

What grade can I achieve?

For each of the units you complete you can achieve either a pass, merit or distinction.

Progression opportunities

Upon successful completion, you may be able to consider the Level 3 course or move into employment.


Level 3 BTEC Certificate and Diploma in Business

The Level 3 Certificate and Diplomas in Business are two year full-time courses.

The aim of the course is to introduce you to business studies which will help you to understand more fully the business world developing a range of skills related to both small and large businesses.

The course is a practical qualification set at Level 3 and this two year programme is equivalent to 3 A levels.

What are the study options for the Level 3 Course?

Completed units are accumulated so that different qualifications could be awarded but the aim is for all students to achieve an Extended Diploma:

  • The Certificate consists of two core and one optional unit
  • The Subsidiary Diploma consists of four core plus two optional units
  • The Diploma consists of four core plus eight optional units
  • The Extended Diploma consists of four core plus fourteen optional units

 

For example, after the first term you should have achieved the Certificate and be on your way to completing the Subsidiary Diploma by the end of the second term.

Core Units include:

  • the business environment
  • business resources
  • introduction to marketing
  • business communication

which are all fundamental to the success of business organisations.

Optional Units are wide ranging and may include:

  • business accounting
  • recruitment and selection
  • creative product promotion
  • internet marketing
  • management accounting
  • aspects of employment law

 

How is the course assessed?

You will be required to complete coursework which will be in a variety of formats from written reports and briefs through to role-plays and presentations.

What else will I do as part of the studies?

Have you ever seen Dragon’s Den? Past students have immensely enjoyed selecting products and creating their own pitches to put before teams of Dragons from local industry in pitching their small business ideas as part of their unit assessments. Work placements are also offered as part of the course.

What grade can I achieve?

For each of the units you complete you can achieve either a pass, merit or distinction.

Progression opportunities

Upon successful completion, you may decide to progress onto HE or employment.

Additional learning support

As part of your learning programme, if you have not yet attained a grade C/4 or equivalent in mathematics and English language, you will be required to study a Functional Skill or GCSE in these subjects.

Students may require additional support for a number of reasons. At the start of your course you will be asked to complete an initial assessment in order for us to identify any additional needs that you may have. During your course, your personal tutor will be able to guide you on how best to access support.
