New training opportunities for retail staff

We are launching two training courses aimed at the retail sector, the City & Guilds Diploma (level two) in Retail Skills and the City & Guilds Certificate (level 3) in Retail Skills Management. These are aimed at new recruits to the retail sector and to those with some experience who wish to develop their skills base to enhance their career progression. Both are part time one-year courses.

Jane Le Poidevin, Faculty Director said:

‘We have been working very closely with the local retail industry to develop courses appropriate to their needs. By offering two entry levels we are confident that both newcomers to the sector as well as those seeking to take their next career step will benefit. Equally, employers themselves will be able to offer staff a defined development plan that will assist with any recruitment and retention challenges they may be facing.’

Jo Porritt, head of the Chamber of Commerce retail sub-group is very supportive of the college’s new initiative:

‘Retail plays a vital role in the island and it is essential that potential new recruits recognise that the sector offers attractive career opportunities. With our changing shopping habits plus the impact of the internet, it is important that staff in the industry are equipped with the skills to embrace the opportunities technology offers and to ensure the island has a vibrant retail sector in years to come.’

Course content covers a range of subjects from dealing with customer complaints to stock control, from design and display to staff management. Both courses are being offered on a modular basis meaning that staff can enrol at different points throughout the year ensuring maximum flexibility for employers.

The level two course runs from 10.00am to 4.30pm Mondays; level three from 4.30pm to 8.30pm on Tuesdays. Full details are available from course leader Helen Glenn heleng@gcfe.net.
